OVERVIEW |
| The Phonsavan Town is the new capital of Xieng Khouang Province, Laos. This town was built in the mid 1970s, because the old capital of Xieng Khouang was utterly destroyed during the fighting between the Pathet Lao and American backed anti-communist troops. Its most famous attraction is the nearby Plain of Jars. The population is 57,000 in this new capital of Xieng Khouang which began only a few years ago. Since its inception there has been much development from scratch; but only a few of its streets now lined with concrete structures, some government buildings, a bank, two markets and a few small hotels and guesthouses are partially paved. A mandatory bust of President Kaysone Phomvihane stood atop a Buddhist-style pavilion.
The Lao-Vietnamese Friendship Monument was built over the unidentified war dead of the recent Lao-Vietnamese clash. But the quarrel has been patched up and many Vietnamese have come to settle here overwhelming the Lao and Phuan peoples, their language and culture.
