PAKBENG
OVERVIEW |
| The small rustic town of Pakbeng is located at the junction of the Nam Beng and the Mekong River, lying half-way on the Mekong River between Huay Xay at the Thai-Lao border and Luang Prabang. It is a market town and transit point for travels to Oudomxay, Huay Xai and Luang Namtha as well as the popular destination of Luang Prabang. Here are boat landings and boat ticket booths (fast boat and slow boat in separate buildings 100 metres apart). Because the town is very small, houses and karaoke lounges and restaurants with Thai music fill the air until the wee hours of the morning. Noisy lorries continue the noise in the early hours of the morning as they grind along the one-road town. The Luang Say Lodge doesn't suffer from noise as it is located at the end of a secondary road beside the Mekong River. Wooden houses are built along the steep slope of the hill with makeshift stalls and coffee shops at the base. In its main street tribal peoples like the Hmong and Thai Lue can be seen daily bringing their embroidery and other handicrafts to the market for sale.
In the town proper are two temples of mild interest: Wat Khok Kho, the newer wat of recent construction has a monks’ quarters, and the older temple, Wat Sin Jong Jaeng farther north along the road dates back to the early French colonial period. Murals on the front walls depict figures with big noses and moustaches. Tourists traveling by slow boat from Huay Xay to Luang Prabang have to overnight in this village-town. Its electricity supply is on from 6pm to 6am daily.
In the hills surrounding Pak Beng are hill tribe villages worth some exploring. The most numerous are the Hmong villages, followed by Akha and ethnic Thai minorities like the Thai Lue, Thai Dam and Lao Huay villages. A guide is necessary to make visits to these villages.
